-
- 4. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
- After the introductory screen, the main menu is displayed.
- 4.1. Using the menus
-
- Basketball Statistics Manager menus are flexible and easy to
- use. To access any of the items on the menus, move the
- cursor to your selection with the arrow keys and press
- <Enter>. Typing the first letter of any item will also
- work.
-
- You can leave any menu by pressing the ESC key except the
- main menu. As a safeguard against accidental abortion of
- the program you must either press 'Q' or choose 'Quit' from
- the menu.
-
- 4.2. Getting Help
-
- You can get help anytime by simply pressing the F1 key. The
- help screen will give you specific information about the
- menu items. After you are done with the help screen, simply

-
- 5. MAIN MENU
-
- 5.1. Stats
-
- This item will allow you to add, edit and delete statistics
- of a selected player in a selected game.
-
- 5.2. Print
-
- This item will give you a choice of 7 different reports and
- a Printer Setup utility.
-
- 5.3. Team Roster
-
- This option will allow you to add, edit and delete team
- roster members and keep an up to date roster list.
-
- 5.4. Utilities
-
- This option gives you a submenu from which you can
- Begin a new season
- Modify Team Title
- Modify season year
- Manipulate records
- Perform routine maintenance
-
- The following sections will give you a detail description of
- these items.
-
- 6. Stats Menu
-
- You probably will use this menu more than any other menus in
- the system. This is where you add, edit and delete
- statistics of a game.
-
- 6.1. Enter statistics of a game
-
- After selecting this option, you will be prompted to enter
- the name of the opponent. This name must be unique and is
- restricted to 18 characters. BSM will automatically convert
- the name into uppercase letters.
-
- The next prompt will ask you whether this game is a
- conference game or not. BSM needs this information for
- producing reports. If you don't wish to differentiate
- between Conference and Non-Conference games, then press 'Y'
- for Yes.
-
- Next, you will be given a list of players. Use the arrow
- keys and select the player for whom you wish to enter
- statistics.
-
- The Statistics-entry-screen will appear. It displays the
- name of the player, the name of the opponent and whether the
- game was a conference or non-conference game. You are
- prompted to enter the statistics. For example, the first
- item is FOULS. You will enter the number of fouls the
- player had, and then press <Enter>.
-
- You can move between fields by using PgUp and PgDn keys.
- This comes handy when you made a mistake. You can go back
- to that field and enter the correct value.
-
- Calculated fields, such as 'Field Goal Percentage' or 'Total
- Rebounds' are automatically handled by BSM. If you don't
- want to keep track of a particular stat, just leave it as
- zero.
-
- After you enter the values for the last item, BSM asks
- whether you want to 'Add more stats'. If you do, press
- <Enter>. The list of players appears again, with the
- highlight on the next player from the list. The name of the
- previous player will appear in a lighter color. This will
- help you remember which players you have entered statistics
- for.
-
- Once you enter stats for a player, the only way to change it
- is by selecting 'Edit' from the 'Stats' menu.
-
- NOTE: The evaluation copy of BSM is limited to ten games.
-
- 6.2. Edit Statistics of a game
-
- Select this item, when you need to correct previously-
- entered stats for a player. You select the game and the
- player for whom you wish to edit stats. The stats-entry-
- screen will appear. Use PgUp and PgDn keys to move among
- the fields and enter the correct values.
-
- After the last item, BSM asks whether you want to 'Edit more
- stats'. If you do, press <Enter>. The list of players
- appears again, with the highlight on the next player from
- the list. The same procedure repeats.
-
- If you wish to edit stats from a different game, you need to
- go back to the 'stats' menu and select 'Edit Statistics of a
- game'. Then select the correct game from the opponent list.
-
- The opponent list includes the name of the opponent followed
- by a 'Y' or a 'N'. A 'Y' will indicate that the game was a
- Conference game and a 'N' will indicate that the game was
- Non-Conference.
-
- 6.3. Delete Selected Statistics of a game
-
- Select this item, when you need to delete previously-entered
- stats for a player. You select the game and the player for
- whom you wish to delete stats. The stats-entry-screen will
- appear. You will be asked to confirm the deletion. Select
- 'Yes' to delete the stats and 'No' to keep them unchanged.
-
- BSM asks whether you want to 'Delete more stats'. If you
- do, press <Enter>. The list of players appears again, with
- the highlight on the next player from the list. The same
- procedure repeats.
-
- If you wish to delete stats from a different game, you need
- to go back to the 'stats' menu and select 'Delete Selected
- Statistics of a game'. Then select the correct game from
- the opponent list.
-
- The opponent list includes the name of the opponent followed
- by a 'Y' or a 'N'. A 'Y' will indicate that the game was a
- Conference game and a 'N' will indicate that the game was
- Non-Conference.
-
- 6.4. Delete entire Statistics of a game
-
- Select this item, when you want to delete all the stats that
- belong to a particular game. Unlike 'Delete Selected
- Statistics of a game', this item will not prompt you to
- select a particular player.
-
- BSM gives you a list of all the games. Select the game you
- want to delete. You will be asked to confirm the deletion.
- Select 'Yes' to delete the stats and 'No' to keep them
- unchanged.
-
- The opponent list includes the name of the opponent followed
- by a 'Y' or a 'N'. A 'Y' will indicate that the game was a
- Conference game and a 'N' will indicate that the game was
- Non-Conference.
-
- 7. PRINT MENU
-
- From this menu you select the kind of report you wish to
- print. You can also select the type of printer that you
- have.
-
- 7.1. Game
-
- This is the most widely used report. It will print the
- stats of all the players against a particular team. You
- probably want to print a 'game report' after you enter the
- stats of a game.
-
- 7.2. Conference Accumulative
-
- This report contains the names of the players followed by
- their performance in Conference games. It includes a team
- total at the bottom of the page.
-
- 7.3. Conference Averages
-
- This report contains the names of the players followed by
- their averages in the following categories: Points,
- Rebounds, Assists, Turnovers, Steals, Blocked Shots, Three-
- point Field Goals. The report only includes Conference
- games. It includes a team total at the bottom of the page.
-
- 7.4. Overall Accumulative
-
- This report contains the names of the players followed by
- their performance in Conference and Non-Conference games.
- It includes a team total at the bottom of the page.
-
- 7.5. Overall Averages
-
- This report contains the names of the players followed by
- their averages in the following categories: Points,
- Rebounds, Assists, Turnovers, Steals, Blocked
- Shots, Three-point Field Goals. The report includes
- Conference and Non-Conference games. It also includes a
- team total at the bottom of the page.
-
- 7.6. Individual Performance
-
- This report shows the performance of a player against
- difference opponents. You can select particular players to
- print the report for, or you can select all the players.
- This is a good report for the end-of-season handbook.
-
- 7.7. Season Summary
-
- This report will show a summary of the season. It lists the
- following: Our score, Opponent, Opponent's Score, Leading
- scorer, Points. This is a good report for the end-of-season
- handbook.
-
- 7.8. Printer Setup
-
- Some of the reports of BSM require the printer to print in
- condensed form. Each brand of printers has its own code for
- printing in condensed form. If you have difficulty getting
- your printer to print in condensed form, select the printer
- that most closely resembles your printer.
-
- Since we don't have access to every printer, our list is
- limited. We welcome any comments about the result you get
- on different printers using our printer selection. If you
- send us the proper codes for your printer, we will add that
- to our list and send you an updated copy of BSM with your
- printer included at no charge.
-
- For more information about the printing capabilities of your
- printer, consult your Printer's Manual.
-
- 8. TEAM ROSTER
-
- From this sub-program, you can keep your roster list up-to-
- date. You have a list of players. TEAM ROSTER will allow
- you to add, edit or delete names from this list. When you
- are done, press ESC to return to the main menu.
-
- 8.1. Add a team member
-
- Put the highlight on any player. Press F4. A box will
- appear on the right hand side of the screen. Enter the name
- of the player. This name is limited to 20 characters.
- Press <Enter> when you are done.
-
- 8.2. Edit a team member
-
- Put the highlight on the name you wish to edit. Press
- <Enter>. A box will appear on the right hand side of the
- screen with the name of the player in it. Correct the name
- and press <Enter> when you are done.
-
- BSM will then change all occurrences of this name in its
- main data file.
-
- 8.3. Delete a team member
-
- Put the highlight on the name you wish to delete. Press F3.
- You are asked to confirm the deletion. Select 'Yes' to
- delete the name, 'No' to keep it unchanged.
-
- If you select 'Yes', then BSM will delete all occurrences of
- this name in its main data file.
-
- NOTE: While we developed BSM, we made every effort to keep it
- adaptable to different situations. For example, we had to
- consider users who wanted to differentiate Conference and
- Non-Conference games. At the same time, we had to consider
- the users who just did the opposite.
-
- In the roster program, we have added two little extra
- features.
-
- 1) Sometimes, you can't attribute a particular stat to only
- one player. Rebounds are a good example of this situation.
- If team A shoot the ball and it hit the rim and went out of
- bounds, team B will get possession. But, who got the
- rebound? In this situation, you probably want to give the
- defensive rebound to team B as a whole.
-
- BSM will allow you to enter 'TEAM' as one of your roster
- members. It will treat it differently in only one manner:
- any names that you add to your list, will appear before
- 'TEAM' in the list. This way, 'TEAM' will always be the
- last name on your list. Remember, the word TEAM must be in
- all capital letters.
-
- 2) BSM will allow you to keep track of your opponent's
- totals for each game. This way, you can compare your team's
- totals, to the opponent's totals. If you wish to use this
- option, add the word 'OPPONENT' to your team members. BSM
- will treat 'OPPONENT' differently. Any names that you add
- to your list, will appear before 'OPPONENT' in the list.
- This way, 'OPPONENT' will always be the last name on your
- list. The special word TEAM will appear just before
- OPPONENT. Remember, the word OPPONENT must be in all
- capital letters.
-
- When, you print a report, BSM ignores the stats entered for
- OPPONENT when calculating team totals. It will print your
- opponent's totals, followed by your team's totals.
-
- 9. UTILITIES
-
- This menu allows you to go through the necessary steps to
- begin a new season, edit some vital values, manipulate
- records and perform maintenance routines.
-
- 9.1. Begin a new season
-
- At the beginning of each season, you need to set up BSM for
- a new season. This item allows you to perform the necessary
- steps. To begin a new season you must follow these steps in
- the order described:
-
- 1) Confirm the deletion of stats from the previous season
- 2) Enter a team title for your team
- 3) Enter a season year, for example: 1990-1991
- 4) Enter the names of your players using 'Team Roster' from
- the main menu.
- 5) Enter stats of your first game using 'Enter statistics
- of a game' from the 'Stats' menu.
-
- 9.2. Modify Team Title
-
- The team title will appear on most of your reports. If you
- need to edit or change this title, use this item. The
- change will not affect your statistical data.
-
- 9.3. Modify season year
-
- The season year will appear on most of your reports. If you
- need to edit or change this, use this item. If you change
- this item, in the middle of the season, your records might
- become corrupted.
-
- 9.4. Records
-
- The ability to keep track of records is what distinguishes
- BSM from most other programs. With BSM, you enter your
- current records once, and BSM will take of everything else.
- It will check to see if any records have been tied or
- broken. If so, it will inform you!
-
- BSM will keep track of four different records:
-
- 1) Individual season records. These are individual
- records taken from the performance of a player throughout
- the season. It includes the player's name and the season.
-
- 2) Team Season Records. These are team records taken from
- the performance of the entire team throughout the season.
- It only includes the season.
-
- 3) Individual Game Records. These are taken from the
- performance of each player during each game. It includes
- the name of the player, the opponent and the season.
-
- 4) Team Game Records. These are taken from the performance
- of the entire team during a game. It includes the name of
- the opponent and the season.
-
- All records include the name of the record and the numerical
- value associated with it.
-
- 9.4.1. Modify Records
-
- Before you can use the capabilities of BSM, you need to
- enter your current records. BSM will keep these data in
- files and if it finds any tied or broken records, it makes
- the necessary changes to the data. Select the kind of
- record you wish to modify. (Refer to section 9.4 for
- information on different kinds)
-
- You will see an entry screen. The names of the records
- appear on the left hand side. Put the highlight on the
- column next to the name of the record for which you want to
- enter a value and press <Enter>. Enter the necessary
- information and press <Enter> again. Follow the same
- procedure for all the other record names.
-
- Suppose your are modifying 'Individual Game Records' and the
- record for 'Most Field Goals Attempted' is 20. In order to
- enter this information, you put the highlight on the column
- next to 'Individual Game Records' and press <Enter>. Type
- 20 and press <Enter>. Enter the player's name, opponent's
- name and the season in the same manner.
-
- Any time that BSM finds a person attempting more field goals
- than 20, it will erase the old record and replaces it with
- the new record.
-
- If BSM finds a player who also attempted 20 field goals, it
- will add it to its data file. Now, you have two players
- holding the same record.
-
- If you have two players holding the same record, then put
- the highlight on that record's name. Press F4. Enter the
- proper information. Now you have two copied of the same
- record which indicates you have a tied record.
-
- You can edit any value on the screen by putting the
- highlight on it and pressing <Enter>. You could press F3 to
- delete records.
-
- If you don't wish to keep track of a certain record, enter 0
- for its numerical value. The record will not appear on the
- printed reports.
-
- Note: BSM contains a list of record names for each record kind.
- These names are permanent and cannot be deleted or edited.
- If you attempt to edit a 'record name' you will get an error
- message.
-
- Also, you cannot delete a unique record. An example will
- make it clear: if you have more than one player holding the
- same record, you may delete all BUT ONE of them. If you
- have only one player holding a record, then that record
- cannot be deleted.
-
- 9.4.2. Check Records
-
- This item will allow you to check and update the records.
- Select the kind of record that you want to check (Refer to
- section 9.4 for information on different kinds). BSM will
- begin checking your records. If it finds that a record is
- tied or broken, it will inform you. It then asks you
- whether you want further processing. Select 'Yes' if you
- want the change to be stored in the data file. Select 'No'
- to keep the data file unchanged.
-
- There are situations in which you don't want to process a
- broken or tied record. Suppose that the record for the best
- field goal percentage is 90% (9 out of 10). A player shoots
- 1 out of 1 and gets a percentage of 100%. You certainly
- don't want to process the broken record in such a case.
-
- We suggest that you run these checks once at the end of the
- season, unless you periodically need to know whether records
- have been broken or not.
-
- 9.4.3. Print Records
-
- To print record sheets, select this item. Record sheets
- will have all the information about records. It is a good
- supplement to your end-of-season handbook. To print, select
- the kind of record you wish to print and press <Enter>.
-
- 9.5. Maintenance
-
- BSM uses several data files to store its information. For
- fast access to data, there are some index files that are
- used. All of these files must be kept updated periodically.
- A problem in one file, will very likely cause problems on
- other files.
-
- One of the most frequent problems concerns the index files.
- The technical term is 'corrupted index file'. It means that
- the index file and the data file don't match. This is a
- serious problem, but it could be easily corrected, if you
- rebuild the index files. This is one of the routines that
- this menu item will perform: it will update your index
- files. If you get unusual errors, or 'internal' errors,
- then simply select this item and your problem will most
- likely be solved.
-
- 10. Making backup copies
-
- We suggest frequent backup of your data. The easiest way is
- to copy all files to your backup disk. This way, you will
- have a disk from which you could run BSM. You could copy
- BSM to a new disk for each new season and label it with the
- season year. Using this method, you will have an archive of
- all your stats from previous seasons.
-
- 10.1. If you have one floppy drive
-
- 1) Place a DOS disk in drive A.
- 2) Type the following commands:
- FORMAT A: /S
- WARNING: MAKE SURE THE DISK IN DRIVE B IS EMPTY. THIS
- COMMAND WILL ERASE ALL THE INFORMATION ON THE DISK.
- 3) Place your destination disk in drive A and follow the
- directions given..
- 4) Place your BSM disk (source disk) in drive A.
- 5) Type the following command:
- COPY A:\*.* B:\
- This will copy all the files. Each file is displayed as it
- is copied. You need to swap the disks when told.
-
- 10.2. If you have two floppy drives
-
- 1) Place a DOS disk in drive A.
- 2) Place your destination disk in drive B.
- 3) Type the following commands:
- FORMAT B: /S
- WARNING: MAKE SURE THE DISK IN DRIVE B IS EMPTY. THIS
- COMMAND WILL ERASE ALL THE INFORMATION ON THE DISK.
- 4) Place your BSM disk (source disk) in drive A.
- 5) Type the following command:
- COPY A:\*.* B:\
- This will copy all the files in drive A to drive B. Each
- file is displayed as it is copied.
-
- 10.3. If you have one floppy drive and a hard disk
-
- 1) Change to the directory containing your DOS files.
- 2) Place your destination disk in drive A.
- 3) Type the following commands:
- FORMAT A: /S
- WARNING: MAKE SURE THE DISK IN DRIVE B IS EMPTY. THIS
- COMMAND WILL ERASE ALL THE INFORMATION ON THE DISK.
- 4) Change to the directory containing BSM files.
- 5) Type the following command:
- COPY *.* A:\
- This will copy all the files in BSM directory to drive A.
- Each file is displayed as it is copied.
-
- 11. Error codes
-
- #2 THE STATS FILE IS EMPTY.
- This is a warning that will appear when you first use BSM or
- you have just started a new season. It warns you that your
- main data file (stats file) is empty and you cannot
- manipulate any statistics. After you enter stats, this
- message will no longer appear.
-
- #4 NAME ALREADY EXISTS.
- Such a name was already in the roster list. You cannot have
- duplicate names on the list.
-
- #5 THE ROSTER FILE DOES NOT EXIST.
- BSM was not able to locate its roster list. Make sure your
- disk contains all the files from the original disk.
